A rare voice in the Romanian lyrical landscape, countertenor Alexandru Costea is experiencing a remarkable artistic rise, shaping a strong career on both national and international stages.

The year 2025 marks a key milestone in his development, with a series of significant debuts: in January, in Handel’s Messiah at the Moldova Philharmonic Orchestra in Iași; in April, with the Radio Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Giulio Prandi, performing the soprano part in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater — a unique moment, as this role is traditionally sung by a soprano — alongside mezzo-soprano Marta Fumagalli. In September, he will perform at the Romanian Athenaeum during the George Enescu International Festival, and in October, he will appear as Hercules at Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Ferrara, as part of the international project MTNT – Music Theatre & New Technologies.

In 2024, he debuted as Ruggiero (Alcina, Jerusalem), returned as Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus, Cluj-Napoca), and was accepted into the Arrigo Boito Conservatory in Parma, where he now studies baroque singing. He also attended the Teatro alla Scala Academy under Sonia Prina’s guidance.

In addition to roles in operas by Mozart, Strauss, and Gnecco, he earned acclaim for his portrayal of Decebalo in the Romanian premiere of Traiano in Dacia by Giuseppe Nicolini (2022).

A graduate of the National University of Music Bucharest, Alexandru is a laureate of major national and international competitions, including Emil Rotundu, Remember Enescu, and George Georgescu.

With refined artistry, technical precision, and a bold repertoire, Alexandru Costea stands out as one of the most promising voices of the new generation of European countertenors.
