The Sibiu State Philharmonic has been a regular participant in the Enescu Festival, attending the last five editions consecutively. In 2017, the Sibiu orchestra performed George Enescu's Symphonie Concertante for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 8, under the baton of conductor Constantin Grigore, with soloist Zlatomir Fung, in Sibiu. Following that, they performed pieces by Dănceanu, Mozart, and Dvořák in the George Enescu Festival Square, under the direction of Cristian Lupeș, with pianist Antonio di Cristofano. In the next edition, also under Maestro Lupeș's direction, the orchestra excelled with 21st-century music in both Sibiu and Bucharest. In 2021, the Sibiu Philharmonic performed at the festival's 25th edition, joined by conductor Tito Ceccherini and soloist Carolin Widmann. This participation notably coincided with the centenary of Enescu's first concert in Sibiu. In 2023, the Philharmonic achieved success during the Romanian Orchestras Season, featuring soloist Ioana Cristina Goicea and american conductor Roderick Cox.
Established on January 1, 1949, the Sibiu State Philharmonic is a professional institution for performances and concerts. Over the years, the Philharmonic has performed thousands of symphonic and opera concerts, building a vast repertoire. This includes everything from cornerstone works of world symphonism, Baroque music, and opera/operetta, to pieces for children and youth, as well as fusion programs blending classical music with alternative rock, jazz, and new electronic trends.
The Sibiu Philharmonic had a busy 2024, organizing 213 events, including 50 symphonic concerts, and drawing over 30,000 spectators. Its achievements are further highlighted by several prestigious awards: the Excellence Award from the Union of Music Critics, Editors, and Producers of Romania for the „Wonderful New Music Festival” (2022), the National Order „Cultural Merit” in the rank of Commander from President Klaus Iohannis (2021) and the Music Award within the „Radio Romania Cultural Awards” (2020).
